And you silently vowed not to ever shave or marry a man that shaved so as not to subject your own kids to its odor. But worse than the stench was seeing your darling dad or brother suffer with razor bumps days after said shaving.

Fast forward a good 15 or 20 years and all we can say is thank God for innovation! Magic has upgraded its depilatory formula to be scent-free and we've learned all types of tips and tricks to keep ingrown hairs at bay. And contrary to popular belief, not all black men suffer from shaving bumps. Here, experts share their best tips for a smooth face.

1. Exfoliate the skin before shaving

Using a gentle exfoliant will remove dead skin cells, open your skin's pores and keep your beard hairs above the skin's surface. This makes it easier for the blade to remove all the hairs when you shave.

Try: Jack Black's Face Buff Energizing Scrub ($17, sephora.com)2. Pre-lift ingrown hairs

If you tend to suffer from ingrown hairs, you must lift them prior to shaving. This can be done with an exfoliator as mentioned above, a face cloth soaked in warm water, which opens the pores, or products designed specifically to lift the hair away from the skin.

Try: Tend Skin, The Skincare Solution ($8, amazon.com)

3. Use clippers or electric shaver instead of razors

Razors cut hair at an angle -- and that's a welcome door for ingrown hairs. Clippers and electric shavers, however, remove hair at the root. Seen as the panacea for preventing razor bumps, clippers and electric shavers provide a closer shave, which is paramount for men with curly-kinky textures . According to grooming expert Lanier Long, it's best to "cut longer hairs with a clipper/edger first. If, however, the clipper doesn't provide a close enough shave, then use an electric shaver."

Try: WAHL Pro Beard Trimmer ($27.95, Wahl-store.com)

4.Shave with the hair, not against it

It is generally recommended to shave with or across the grain of the beard, but not directly against it--doing the latter leads to razor burn and in-grown hairs. Glide the razor gently over the skin, holding the skin taut with the free hand. Keep the razor clear of creams and hair before gliding it each time. Try not to run the blade over the hair more than twice.

5. Moisturize after shaving

According to experts, shaving can remove up to two layers of skin, leaving it raw and dry. Moisturizing with either an after-shave balm, a facial moisturizer with a SPF of 15 or higher, will soothe the skin after it has been shaved, reduce irritation and protect it from external elements.
Try: The Art of Shaving Moisturizer ($35, bloomingdales.com)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Iman Talks Beauty: Black Voices Video Exclusive

Most know of Iman as the iconic model whose gorgeous face graced countless magazine spreads and ads throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. But the Iman of 2010 is focused less on the world of fashion and more on business -- her eponymous cosmetic line, Iman Cosmetics, and the accessories line inspired by the Somalian-born beauty's love of travel, Global Chic.

Iman sat down with Black Voices for an exclusive shoot to discuss her post-modeling career.
The Oscars are over, award hooplah has died down and everyone is on to the next sensationalized news. Well, not exactly everyone. Howard Stern, Sirius radio shock jock, seems to still have his eye on one particular nominee, and not in a good way. On his show Monday, Stern and co-host Robin Quivers had mouthful to say about 'Precious' star and Best Actress Oscar nominee Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibie's future in Hollywood.

"There's the most enormous, fat black chick I've ever seen. She is enormous. Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie," Stern said. "She should have gotten the Best Actress award, because she's never going to have another shot. What movie is she gonna be in?"

Although Sidibe, 26, does have a new Showtime series 'The C Word' and a big-screen appearance opposite Zoe Kravitz in the drama 'Yelling to the Sky,' lined up, there is truth in Stern's words. This might get a lot women upset, but if we're honest, the source of anger isn't really from what Stern said, but how he said it.
Sidibe despite all her acting prowess, pleasant demeanor and unapologetic confidence, is still an estimated 350 pounds, which is a very disturbing weight for someone her age and height. Last November, Sidibe opened up to Oprah Winfrey, who has struggled with weight herself, saying that her own personal struggle began at very early age.

"It's something I've had to work at. My first diet started when I was six years old," she told the talk show queen. "I've never been a small girl. One day I had to sit down with myself and decide that I loved myself no matter what my body looked like and what other people thought about my body."

That was before the Oscar nomination, and the fact that everyone in Hollywood now knows her name. Granted, self-love and self-esteem are imperative no matter what size you are, but with African American women having the highest rates of obesity compared to other groups in the U.S., there is something to be said for reexamining how accepting we are of being obesity in our community.

According to the American Obesity Association, 78 percent of black women are overweight, and 50.8 percent are obese. The terms "phat vs fat," "size sexy," and "big and beautiful" all do a good job of masking, instead of fixing, the epidemic that has four out five black women overweight (and sometimes proud of it). It is one thing to be healthy, curvy and voluptuous, but it becomes problematic when we become complacent about being an unhealthy weight.

Obesity among women in our culture increases health risks for heart disease, hypertension, and sleep apnea, just to name a few health conditions. Compared to whites, the health consequences of extra weight in African Americans leads to twice the rate of untimely deaths.

As the bright light continues to shine on Oscar-nominated Sidibe, we appreciate her braggadocio and swagger, but her jokes about being allergic to exercise hurt more than they help. It would benefit us all more if she spoke out about the harmful and damaging effects of obesity and subsequently did something about her own health.

Gabby told Ebony magazine in its March issue, "I learned to love myself, because I sleep with myself every night and I wake up with myself every morning.... I love the way I look. I'm fine with it. And if my body changes, I'll be fine with that."

Without question in time her body will change, whether forced by Hollywood or not, and hopefully so will our views on the "bigger" picture.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Shirea L. The red carpet is the perfect place to debut an eye-popping beauty statement. Gabourey Sidibe loves to rock vibrant hues on the red carpet, but we rarely see the curvaceous cutie experimenting with color when it comes to her makeup. For the Oscars on Sunday, we hope she gives us some alluring eyes.

"It would be wonderful to see her with a bright shadow like Milani's Runway Eyes Shadows #08 Shamrock," say representatives from Milani Cosmetics, who suggest slightly wetting your makeup brush first then dabbing your brush into the shadow for a very colorful impact. To create further drama, we suggest that Sidibe uses Milani's Infinite Liquid Eyeliner in Eternal along the upper lashline to really make her eyes stand out. Remember a little eye color goes a long way, and the area of the eye that has the most color is where people will look first.

Sidibe has small, almond-shaped eyes. White liner will help make eyes sparkle and appear more open, particularly if you have flashing bulbs pointing at you on the red carpet like Sidide. To try the trick at home, start by using a white liner on the inside of your upper and bottom lid. Rimming the eyes will help extend the whites of your eyes so that they appear bigger.

Top makeup artists Tayaba Jafri, of Laura Mercier, and Amy Zdunowski-Roeder, of FACE atelier, have offered BV some tips on how to avoid some common makeup sins.

Concealer, Unconcealed

BV: What is a common mistake some women make when applying concealer, and what are your tips to avoid the "raccoon effect" that some make a mistake doing when applying concealer around the eyes?

Zdunowski-Roeder: Rihanna is a naturally beautiful girl! As we can see in this picture, her concealer is not only applied around her whole eye, but too far down her cheek, which doesn't blend with her skin-toned foundation. Avoid this by dabbing the concealer on the inner corner under your eye and blending it downward to the recessed area under the eye. Blending is critical and the result will be a brighter more composed overall look.

Jafri: In this photo, the makeup on her face looks sheer, and her concealer area has a masque effect, not just because the color is too light, but there's also way too much. Concealer is the most over-used product in cosmetics. Usually the color chosen is too light. Truly, less is more when it comes to concealer. Its best to chose a concealer that is high in pigment so you use even less to cover and correct. I suggest that before applying concealer, try using a sheer brightener such as, Laura Mercier's Secret Brightener ($30, www.lauramercier.com).

When Eye Shadow Goes Wrong

BV: When it comes to eyeshadow is less more?

Zdunowski-Roeder: Fantasia has a smile that can light up the world, yet in this picture your eye is drawn to her dramatic eye shadow. Wearing too much can look extremely unnatural if not blended and balanced with other appropriate colors and tones. Having a good brush to blend your shadows with is important. Overall, eye shadow should complement your features, not over power them. A little bit will go a long way!

Jafri: Less is definitely more when there is such an array of color. However, in Fantasia's case the issue is more about placement and blending. For instance, if the darker tone began lower on her lid and was blended with the brighter tone, we wouldn't see where the colors begin and stop.

Lashed Out

BV: If a woman has lush falsies on her top lashes, should she dare go with a full set of lashes on the bottom, as well?

Zdunowski-Roeder: A natural beauty with a gorgeous voice, Letoya Luckett's makeup in this particular pic is overall quite beautiful, but our eyes are drawn to the lower lash line. For years, women have been striving for thick, dark, long luscious lashes by using mascara, eyelash curlers and falsies. The reason is eyelashes, whether real or not, enhance eye makeup by creating a finished, complete look. If a woman already has thick, natural top lashes, applying lashes to the bottom of the eye is not necessary, and may look unbalanced and un-natural. Less is more when it comes to lower lashes.

Jafri: The only time lashes look appropriate top and bottom is if you are doing theatre or if its Halloween. It's overwhelming.Epecially full sets. I'm an advocate of placing individuals as needed because they look 100% more natural. To lush up your lashes try, individual lashes by MAC Cosmetics ($13, www.maccosmetics.com). To condition lashes for smooth application, try Lash RX by FACE atelier ($22, www.faceatelier.com). It can also be worn alone during the day or night. To add volume to your lashes whether real or faux, try Paula's Choice, Great Big Lashes Mascara ($9.95, www.paulaschoice.com).

Double Trouble Foundation and Blush

BV: What is the key to selecting the right foundation color? And if one applies blush, is there a rule of thumb when selecting blush and applying with foundation?

Zdunowski-Roeder: Lil Kim's makeup has always sizzled as much as her music, but we can see in this pic, her neckline is especially visible with olive tones and her facial foundation is red-tone based, thus not matching. To avoid this, test foundation in natural light on your chin. Unfortunately, the reddish blush is helping to enhance this color, giving her face all-over reddish appearance.

Jafri: It looks like Lil Kim might have an illuminator all over her face giving her a shine that's making her foundation look even lighter, in this case I would like to have seen less. When matching foundation you have to look at the face neck and decolletage together to pick the perfect tone. Many people collect a lot of color on their bodies and end up having a foundation that might match the face but looks light against the body. The one thing that makes foundation look natural is primer. As far as blush tones go, choose a muted natural tone that's found in your skin to enhance and make the skin look healthy. When applying blush, brush right on the apple of the cheek instead of lower cheek sweeping up to temples.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Ageless Sade Covers Ebony, But What's Missing?

Sade proves on the April cover of Ebony that there is nothing old about 51. The 'Soldier of Love' singer looks amazing and ageless in her cover photo, but the magazine has generated some internet buzz because one of the Brit's signature features seems to have been airbrushed away. Her freckled fans are up in arms. It's not as if she wouldn't have looked just as beautiful with her nose and cheeks covered in the familiar dots.

Whether you're rocking bold strokes of charcoal like the models at the Catherine Malandrino show or soft blushes of pinks, as seen on models at Philip Lim, the look and the choice, say makeup experts, is yours to play with. And they want you to play -- where the wild things are and with pretty, sexy, looks.

"I see makeup for fall," says Napoleon Perdis, key makeup artist at Elise Overland. "This woman is not afraid of lipsticks, shadows and lengthy, natural-looking lashes."

At Derek Lam, makeup master Tom Pecheux created a look that recalled primal instincts by channeling Native American beauty: charcoal-dusted eyes with a touch of bronze and berry-stained lips

"You shouldn't try at home," he says of the look. "This look is for the show, but for your own use you'd want something different and more paired down."

So what can you expect to see come fall? A push of greys, blues, corals and pinks. It's a mishmash of spring and fall shades. You'll find a twist on the smoky eye (shadows swept within the inner corners only or deeply rimmed eyes), dark liner with thick stripes of gray, and on the opposite spectrum, light pink nudes on eyes and lips.

But the good news is that you don't need a makeup artist for this spring's simple trends. Check out Black Voices top spring makeup trends to keep you one step ahead of the game.

Pink lipsticks: Celebrities like Kerry Washington in a pale pink and Rihanna in an electric magenta have shown us that pink lipstick shades aren't just for Barbies anymore. Try your hand at pink this Spring while keeping in mind that the darker your complexion, the brighter colors you'll be able to pull off. For a soft, romantic look, try a pale pink like Mac's Cremesheen Lipstick in Shy Girl . For a bolder look, go for a more poppy of MAC's shades like Hollywood Nights.

Long lashes: Not your regular mascara wand's long lashes, this spring false eyelashes make the move from Hollywood to your bathroom. You can find false lashes anywhere from your local drugstore to Sephora, and they are easier to apply than you might think. You'll start by measuring the lashes against your eye-if they're wider than your natural lashes, cut them down lash by lash. Squeeze the glue onto the false lashes and with tweezers and a steady hand, apply the false set as close to your lash line as possible. Make sure to press them down to make sure they dry, and apply a few coats of mascara to intensify the lash look.

Old-Hollywood Waves: In an ode to the Hollywood starlets that paved the way with glamorous, softly waved hair, the same classic glamor has returned for Spring. You can get the look with less fuss than you'd need with a straightener. Start off with a side part and use a large curling iron to curl large sections. Each large section can be pinned up into a large pincurl (either overnight or few a few hours). Once you release the pins, shake your curls out by hand softly to reveal sophisticated waves.

Dramatic eyes paired with a nude lip: If you watched this year's Golden Globes or read the blogs the morning after, you know Halle Berry's sultry smokey eye and nude lip were the finishing touches to her sexpot appearance. A smokey eye is all about drama and smudge, so try e.l.f.'s Single Eyeshadow in Charcoal, pair it with a pure black eyeliner like CoverGirl Perfect Point Eye Liner in Black Onyx, and finish off the eye with a dramatic, volumizing mascara like Dior Show Mascara in Rich Black.

Pastel pink nails: If you don't think pink is for you on your lips, try it on your manicure. Light pink nails are a big trend this spring, and OPI has some great pinks for the spring, like I Pink I Love You and Passion.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Arianna G. There are still many cosmetic brands that offer "tan" as their darkest color. For those of us who are looking for versatility within high-end cosmetics, Sue Devitt cosmetics are a wonderful choice. Her products are great for darker skin tones because of the natural minerals and moisturizing agents in them, which ensure that brown skin stays vibrant and supple, especially during harsh winter months. Recently, Devitt spoke exclusively with Black Voices about how her products are effective in maintaining healthy skin.

"I was inspired to develop a line of nutrient-rich cosmetics for the global marketplace focusing on a treatment infused color palette for women worldwide," Devitt said. "I believe that every woman should have access to versatile and wearable products that work for their personal skin needs and lifestyle."

One of the biggest skin problems that black women face is scarring from acne. Many women turn to unhealthy bleaching cremes and techniques that can severely damage the skin over time. Devitt's 70% Triple Seaweed Gel Foundation ($38), Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation ($38) and SpaComplexion Hydrating Marine Minerals Loose Powder ($32) are filled with natural elements such as Vitamin C and shperical silica that will alleviate scarring from blemishes.

Devitt draws her inspiration from around the world and she believes in giving back to the places where she has found insight for her creativity. She oversees the hydration program non-profit organization, Africa Foundation, which focuses on the development of rural African communities.

"It is my belief of the intense benefits of hydration that has given this concept a deeper, more far-reaching meaning to me," she said. "Hydration for skin and body is important to us as a beauty company, but is also a global issue we are addressing with our current philanthropic efforts. My travels to Africa and involvement with the Africa Foundation have provided me not only with experiences that I am so grateful for, but also with inspiration for one of my latest collections, one that I hope will also give something back to the communities of Africa."

A portion of the proceeds from the Destination Eye Palette in Serengeti ($37.50) will go toward that Africa Foundation to provide water solutions throughout Tanzania.

Philanthropy for a side, also dished on the hottest in spring trends -- long luscious lashes and shimmery cheeks.

E-Z Roller Ball Eye Shadow ($18)

"I like to use shimmer in a tasteful, glamorous way as it adds a bit of fun and excitement to any look and is a great way to transition a day look into the evening effortlessly," she said. "Using a sophisticated sheen is a subtle and soft way to maintain a glowing look. E-Z Eye Roller Ball Eye Shadow in Hydra adds just a subtle hint of shimmer that is not overpowering."

Devitt suggested applying it just to the brow bone as a highlight, and to the inner corners of the eye to brighten. Never forget to curl lashes, she added, and apply three coats of mascara to lengthen and thicken the lashes. Next, she said, squiggle the brush from the very root of the lash outward toward the tip and the formulation will really hold the curl. For impossibly sexy lashes, try Luxury Lash Mascara, she said, which thickens and conditions as it adds volume.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Spring's Hottest Nail Trends

With the edgy manicures of the ever-changing fashionista Rihanna and the unique tips of entertainers like Beyoncé, nails have become as much of a fashion accessory as shoes or a bag. This season, nail choices go beyond color choices to include shape and design, which makes deciding on a nail style a fun way to express your personal style and mood. Here, we bring you this spring's eye-catching nail trends.

Metallic: A popular trend on models during Spring 2010's Fashion Week, shiny metallic nails are undoubtedly flashy and can add spark to any look. The Zoya Reverie Spring 2010 Nail Polish Collection ($7,artofbeauty.com) includes six different metallic colors to brighten up your rainy spring days.

Pastels: What's spring without pretty, soft pastels? Baby pink, mint green, lavender and peach are this spring's poppy pastels. Get your pretty on with OPI's Go On Green ($8, drug stores) or OPI's Los Cabos Coral ($8, drug stores).

Matte: Go for something new this season and leave the glossy top coat behind. A trend that first popped up last summer, matte nails are a hot look post winter and instantly add a rocker-chic element to your look. For a crisp, clean spring look try OPI's matte Alpine Snow or go dark in matte Russian Navy ($8, drug stores).

Moon Manicures: This look is for the daring only: a futuristic twist on the classic old-Hollywood moon manicure, the modern moon manicure substitutes white and black polish with brightly colored polishes topped off with a black crescent shaped tip. To create this punky look at home, apply one coat of a bright polish, like CND Colour & Effects in Raspberry Parfait ($9, CND.com). After it completely dries, block off the bottom third of your nail using a French-manicure sticker, then paint the top portion of your nail with two coats of black, like Essie's Licorice polish ($8, essieshop.com).

Minx Nails: Minx nails have become wildly popular among Black celebrities and add fun to any look. Whether it's Solange or Lady Gaga rocking this nail trend, it isn't going anywhere this spring. From alligator skin to Barack Obama's face, you can go to www.minxnails.com to find a salon that offers your Minx nail design preference for about $40-$55 per set, which can last up to two weeks.
*Fall Bonus: Step your nail game up and get ready for the fall with Chanel's newly released Particuliere ( $23, chanel.com). A hit on the Fall 2010 New York Fashion Week catwalks, this polish is the perfect fall shade but can also be worn as a spring neutral.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Arianna G.

Keri Hilson may have been nominated as Best New Artist at the Grammys, but she is far from a new kid on the block when it comes to having skin that is in. The upcoming stylista went for head-to-toe Hollywood glamour with sexy smoldering eyes that complemented her mermaid shaped gown by Dolce & Gabbana. Celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff is the makeup magician behind her Grammy glow and shares with BV how to get Hilson's look at home with five easy steps.

"I was inspired to play up her beautiful hazel eyes and also give a touch of edge to her Hollywood glam goddess look," says Sheriff, who also works with Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Ciara.

STEP ONE: Prep Skin

"Before applying makeup, always start with clean, toned and moisturized skin," says Sheriff, who used Mary Kay's TimeWise Targeted-Action Eye Revitalizer to refresh and brighten Hilson's eyes. "I love Enessa Neroli Oil Spray to tone and make skin glow."

Lastly, Sheriff applied La Mer moisturizer to finish prepping Hilson's skin.

Beauty Buys:
1) Mary Kay TimeWise Targeted-Action Eye Revitalizer ($35, marykay.com); 2) Enessa Neroli Hydrosol ($29.95, enessa.com); 3) Creme de la Mer Moisturizing Cream ($130, cremedelamer.com)

STEP TWO: The Foundation for a Flawless Face

"I love for Keri to look flawless because she has such a beautiful bone structure," says Sheriff, who used Smashbox Photo Finish Primer to give as a base to ensure Hilson's makeup has lasting wear ability.

Next Sheriff used COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Compact Foundation to create a flawless finish, then sculpted and contoured Hilson's face with COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Bronzer in Light Bronze to create natural glow.

Beauty Buys:
1) Smashbox Photo Finish Primer ($36, smashbox.com); 2) COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Compact Foundation, ($16.46, covergirl.com); 3) COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Bronzer in Light Bronze ($8.18, covergirl.com)

STEP THREE: Get Cheeky

Hilson's Dolce & Gabbana gown was swirled with soft peach tones so Sheriff accented her cheeks with Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color in Strawberry Cream. This cheek hue "has a subtle cotton candy rose tone with a beautiful shimmer to it, so the cheeks just glow," shares Sheriff.

Beauty Buy:
Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color in Strawberry Cream ($10, marykay.com)

STEP FOUR: The Eyes Have It

Hilson asked Sheriff to create a jewel toned smoky eye.

"I chose a beautiful deep purple shade from Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color in Sweet Plum on her lids and lower lash line. As a base to intensify the purple shadow, I applied COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Purple Plume," says Sheriff.

When using color shadows, control the intensity by starting off light then gradually layer more shadow on. Sheriff added depth and drama to eyes by using Tigi Bed Head Big Fat Fun Liner in Purple and COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara in Black on the top and bottom and top lashes. Next, Sheriff applied faux lashes to further up the glam factor.

"I used Ja'Maal Busters Lash Line to add that extra drama for red carpet flare," she said.

To frame Hilson's face, Sheriff filled in the star's naturally high arched brows with Dior Powder Brow Pencil and then brushed them using brow gel. Try Diorshow Brow in Shiny Blond to give the brow shape some shimmer.

Beauty Buys:
1)Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color in Sweet Plum ($6.50, marykay.com); 2) COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Purple Plume, ($7.99, covergirl.com); 3) Tigi Bed Head Big Fat Fun Liner in Purple ($16, amazon.com); 4) COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara in Black ($7.79, covergirl.com); 5) Ja'Maal Busters Lash Line, $10, (jamaalbuster.com); 6) Dior Powder Brow Pencil ($28, sephora.com); 7) Diorshow Brow in Shiny Blond ($17.50, sephora.com)

STEP FIVE: Smile For the Camera

"I didn't want to do just a nude lip and smoky eye so instead I went retro -- think Kevyn Aucoin meets Naomi Campbell in the 90's," said Sheriff of the inspiration for Hilson's pretty pout.

Start by lining the lips with Mary Kay Lip Liner in Berry, then blend with a lip brush to blend. Next, dab COVERGIRL Queen Collection Lip Gloss in Pearled Peach in the center of the lips to create the perfect pout.

Beauty Buys:
1)Mary Kay Lip Liner in Dark Berry ($10, marykay.com)); 2) COVERGIRL Queen Collection Lip Gloss in Pearled Peach ($5.49, covergirl.com)

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Eye-Opening Makeup Tips: Learn How to Make the Most of Your Unique Features

Filed under: Makeup, Celebrity Beauty, How-To

There isn't a make up bag that exists without eye shadow. Yet it can be one of the most misused products we own. In many cases, when a woman purchases eye shadow, the make up consultant behind the counter suggests shadow colors, offers overwhelming advice about how to apply and then out the door she goes -- probably in a state of confusion. How do you know if you've purchased the right eye shadow for your specific eye shape to make them shine their best? Do you even know your eye shape?

Black Voices has compiled some expert tips on how to enhance your eyes based on their unique look.

Cynde Watson, formerly of Bobbi Brown cosmetics and Mark/Avon, has her own makeup line, Color by Cynde Watson, and has brushed the faces of celebs such as Angela Bassett, Anika Noni Rose and Paula Abdul. Makeup artist Alison Raffale spends her days getting her clients red-carpet ready, teaching aspiring makeup artists and working on her tow lines, Skin Alison Raffaele and her paraben-free makeup line Alison Raffaele.

These two top beauty experts offered up a few of their own special eye shadow applying tips for various eye shapes for women who want to create an illusion or enhance what is unique about their eyes.

Eye Shape: Large Round Eyes Like Tracee Ellis Ross

Watson: A woman with large eyes has the freedom to wear multiple shades. Multiple palette shadows, such as, the Snap To It Custom Color Palette by Mark ($8, meetmark.com), is the perfect must have for her make up bag. The overall idea when applying eye shadow to this eye shape is to elongate the eyes. Try using light shadow colors on the center and medium shadow colors in the crease for an elongating effect. Then use dark waterproof eye liner in the inner rim of the eye and on the upper lid while extending the liner beyond the eyelid at the outer corners. But be sure not to line the inner rim of your eyes with light liner shades, that will only make the eye appear larger.

Mark Snap To It Mega Custom Color Palette

Raffaele: Opt for darker shadow colors for a night out than you would for during the day, but when applying the darker shadows, be sure to add a highlighter under the arch of the brow. For that final va va voom, curl lashes and apply mascara to the outer 2/3 of the eye.

Eye Shape: Oval Dreamy Eyes Like Corrine Bailey Rae

Watson: This eye shape is similar to an almond eye shape, except it's just a tad larger in the center and plunges deeper in the corner. To help the inner corner look more level, try applying a soft, bright long-wear cream eye shadow to the inner corner, such as Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear Cream Eye Shadow ($22, bobbibrown.com). Then line the eyes from the inner corner to the outer corner. While applying the liner thicker on the outer corner, gradually make the line thinner going towards the inner corner. Bear in mind that long-wearing eye shadows and gel eyeliners are best for this eye shape because when they dry they don't transfer or smudge, which would make this type of eye appear droopy.

Long-Wear Cream Eye Shadow Bobbi Brown Cosmetics

Raffaele: Arching the brows and using lots of mascara or false lashes are two key techniques that will help bring this eye shape forward.

Eye Shape: Small Eyes Like Nia Long

Watson: A smal,l sultry eye such as this calls for a matte eye shadow. When applying, do so from the lid to the crease right below the brow bone. Apply beige or lighter eyeliner shades inside the inner rim of the eyes or use a light or neutral on the lower lash line and a dark, medium-to-thick liner on the upper lid. As a final touch, add mascara which is a "must" for this shape.

Urban Decay Matte Eye Shadow ( $16, urbandecay.com)

Eye Shape: Almond Shaped Eyes Like Ciara

Watson: The almond shape is the most sought after eye shape; most professional eye-shadow techniques help women achieve this shape eye. But be mindful that less is more when wearing shadow, because typically this eye shape really doesn't have a lot of lid space. Wearing several shades at once will make the eye appear over done. Instead, try going for a smokey eye, which is great for this eye shape, it increases depth. Also try rounding the eye shape just a bit by using a light-to-medium shade to line eyes halfway, being careful not to extend the liner past the outer corner of the eye.

Raffaele: When applying shadow for this shape, as well as any other, a flat eye shadow brush for deepening the corners of the eyes and a great angled liner brush are "must haves." I suggest the Alison Raffaele Concealer Brush Duo ($27, AlisonRaffele.com)

Okay, real talk. I'm hairless on my gams and thank God every day for it. For with all the other grooming areas to be concerned with, hairy legs are a beauty issue I'm blessed not to be worried about. So I feel for women who have to shave every day. Really, I do. But when photos of Mo'Nique at the Golden Globes appeared where she gladly showed off her hot steppas-topped off with a French pedicure-- full of hair, I gasped and did a double take! Is that hair fuzz I see in those photos? Yes, indeed. Why would she groom her face, her underarms, and her toes and not just shave those legs for such a special moment. It reminded me of Julia Roberts hairy reveal a few years ago. Julia, while walking the red carpet, raised her arm to wave at fans and at least three inches of underarm hair waved back. She said Benjamin Bratt, her boyfriend at the time, liked it.
Back then, saving the New York Post and Joan Rivers, there were limited opportunities for post-hair reveal commentary. For Mo'Nique, however, it was a different story. You Tube has seen over 30,000 views from folks who made video responses discussing her hairy legs, and comedian Jimmy Kimmel included it in his monologue, joking that she she was promoting a Chia Pet.

This isn't the first time she's shown those hairy legs, however. In 2006 Mo'Nique confessed to Barbara Walters while on 'The View' that her leg hair is "too much to shave and cut in the morning, and I want to show America what a real leg looks like." She further explained that she does shave under her arms because "it's a different type of hair that will make you smell."

Smooth legs on women have been heralded as the sexier choice by the opposite sex, while having hair on your legs, as well, not so much. And women go through great lengths to not show just how hairy they can get with monthly waxing appointments and high-priced laser hair removal procedures. So my question is if one goes through the trouble of shaving a mustache, shaving the underarms and waxing down there, shouldn't the same rule apply to your legs? And now that Mo'Nique has been nominated for an Oscar, should she go ahead and shave for the special occasion?
No longer viewed as something gangbangers and bad boys wear, tattoos are becoming more and more acceptable in the mainstream. So when everyone started rocking those Polynesian symbols -- think Mike Tyson, but not on the face -- rarely were people offended to see them on the small of the back on women or around the biceps of men. The beauty in those tribal designs elevates the art form to a better status.

However, every time tats show up on the red carpet as the accessory a female celebrity truly couldn't leave home without, I can't help but wonder if that celebrity regrets inking her body in that way. Witness Mary J. Blige's humongous tats on both of her toned arms; they always seem to detract from her entire look. Or the numerous tats Fantasia wears on her thighs and arms and hands that makes her look like Lil Wayne's twin. Those tear-drop tats that seemingly decorate Lil Wayne's entire body always make me think he needs a good scrub. But on the flip side, the tats on Angelina Jolie or Meagan Fox never stopped anyone from calling them glamorous or sexy. Nor do the small tats trailing the neck bone of Rihanna make her look anything less than gorgeous. On her, it looks rather chic, in that alien kind of way. In Alicia Keys' video for 'Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart, we see her flower-painted back that takes tattooing on a painterly, Georgia O'Keefe-type of path.

So is it the size and the type of tats that create a thin line between tacky and tantalizing? French couturier Chanel thinks so. When Karl Lagerfeld trotted models down Chanel's runway last fall wearing temporary tattoo designs, editors went all gaga over them. To be fair, label-stamping is something makeup artist Nzingha Stewart did with Lil Kim when she painted Louis Vuitton symbols all over Kim's naked body for the cover of Paper magazine some ten years ago. And M.A.C has does tons of images with body paint over the years.

Before last fall (Rodarte also showed body art) no other high-end brand had really embraced the concept of tats by creating them for purchase. This spring, transfer tats from the House of Chanel-images of bangles, beads with the Chanel logo at the end of the link-can be yours for a mere $75 for a pack of 55 transfers (visit www.chanel.com for more information). With tats becoming couture will they now become acceptable as the cool, new symbol for luxe? Will girls from around the way take it a step further and brand their bodies with the label they love the most? Or will we still think it's just deadwrong.com? Tell us BV Beauties, would you dare to wear these temporary tats?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Rest in Peace Roxanna Floyd

An incredibly talented light has burned out in the beauty world. Roxanna Floyd, 49, makeup artist to Hollywood's finest has died. Details are slowly coming in as to the cause of death. Her family has yet to release a statement to the public. Unconfirmed reports have surfaced that Floyd died in her sleep at her home on Jan. 28, 2010.

Floyd's work is highly respected within the beauty, fashion and entertainment industries. She's worked with some of the world's A-list celebrities, including Whitney Houston, Ashanti, Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Angela Bassett, Iyanla Vanzant, Halle Berry and Queen Latifah. Her work has been featured in a multitude of publications including Essence, Ebony, InStyle (including this month's Whitney Houston cover), Redbook, Braids & Beauty and Today's Black Woman.

On March 30, 2009, Floyd filed suit against Queen Latifah (whose real name is Dana Owens) in federal court in Manhattan for breach of contract. Floyd claimed that between the time period of July 2005 and February 2008, Latifah owed her more than $700.000 for services rendered. Amanda Silverman, Latifah's spokeswoman responded publicly that the lawsuit has no merit.

Known for transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, Floyd was sought out by Whitney Houston for her comeback-album world tour. Celebrity hairstylist and Houston's go-to hair dresser, Tiffanie Dixon, worked with Floyd on the "I Look to You" tour.

"Roxanna 'Roxi' Floyd was one of the strongest and most spiritual women I've come across in a great while. Roxi was a pillar of strength to me," says Dixon, who has worked with Floyd for past four years. "We just finished a shoot together last week, and Roxi worked her magic. Makeup artistry came so natural to her. She looked at a person's face like a canvas. We have suffered a great lost in the beauty and fashion industry, and she will be greatly missed but never forgotten!"

Floyd's story was a true American success. She pulled herself up to the ranks of the makeup world through sheer grit, hard work and determination. She began her career in makeup as a sales associate at Macy's. In an interview she gave from June 2008 she said,

"At the cosmetic counter, I was able to practice and hone my art. As a makeup artist, you have the opportunity to work on every type of skin, face and eye shapes. Real women, not pretty models or good looking celebrities, so your skill can really develop under those conditions."

After teaching herself the tricks of the trade, Floyd created a foundation for her craft by attending the Robert Fiance Beauty Institute in New York (now defunct). With degree in hand, she began to gain a client base. Her first celebrity client was Yoko Ono. Ono took a liking to Floyd, and her career took off.

Sam Fine, one of Hollywood's most sought after makeup artists, was a personal friend of Roxanna and is devastated by her death. On his Twitter account, Fine declared a day of silence in remembrance of his dear friend. He spoke with Black Voices about the strong impact that Roxanna contributed to the industry.

"I fondly remember meeting Roxanna Floyd the first day I worked for Essence magazine. We were working together on a beauty story, and as I began doing makeup on my model, I remember Roxanna pulling me aside to give me advice on the "look" that the client prefers. She had a maternal quality that made you listen and ask for guidance. Her years in the industry made an invaluable resource of information and inspiration. It's ironic that our last conversation, she would still be giving me advice, this time on how to deal with the demands of being a celebrity makeup artist.

Roxanna will be remembered as woman who was not only a talented artist, but someone who sincerely cared about other professionals in the industry."

There has been an outpouring of emotion from celebrities, fan and friends from all over the world, expressing sorrow and sadness over the death of Floyd.

Singer Deborah Cox wrote on Twitter, "We lost another GREAT person, amazingly GIFTED artist, my friend Roxanna Floyd. R.I.P my sweet. You were always so kind. So blessed to know u"

Singer Monica Arnold, who worked with Floyd from 1997-2003, was overcome with grief. Early Friday, she Tweeted, "My heart aches, and I can see The face of her husband who I called uncle Ricky because he favored my dad. Most of all he adored her and spent decades by her side. God Bless her family"
Abiola Abrams Pop Culture writer and BET/VH1 personality had the pleasure of working with Floyd on a beauty segment this past year.

Abrams shared her sentiments with Black Voices this afternoon: "Roxanna Floyd was a beautiful spirit. Her business was beauty, but she was also in the business of encouragement and empowerment. I met her on a hot summer's day, just off of the sweaty streets of New York City, not exactly how you want to meet a woman who has beat the faces of the most gorgeous women in the world. She was gracious, kind and the verve that she had for her work should inspire us all to do better at our chosen professions. Actually, beauty was not just Roxanna Floyd's profession, but her passion, and she will be sorely missed."

The beauty expert was also spearheading the brand makeover of Fashion Fair Cosmetics as head creative beauty director. "We are truly overwhelmed by the unfortunate news of Roxanna Floyd's untimely passing. Not only was Roxanna our creative beauty director, she was a friend...a sister...she was Fashion Fair Cosmetics family," says a statement from the Chicago-based cosmetics brand. "She possessed a wonderful gift of creating, accentuating and transforming beauty. Her innovation, creativity and flair will be missed -- but her legacy and spirit will continue to live."
This spring, the make styles we peeped backstage at the collections ranged from standard barely there nudes and bronze-y corals to new, interesting use of pastels. Here, our picks for the best looks you can rock in real life.

Bronze Skin - Glowing skin is all about health and wealth -- or at least your complexion looking like you have both. That's why a faux sun-kissed glow comes on strong this spring via bronzers for light, medium and deep complexions. Seen at Tory Burch, ADAM and Carlos Miele, bronzers deliver the perfect pick-me up for sun-depraved skin tones, and offer deeper complexions (think Alek Wek) the sparkling highlights needed for dimension, sans foundation.

Brightly Colored Lips - The trend of bright pink lips worn by Alicia Keys and Rihanna, which was taken from last spring, continues. This time, as seen at the Marc Jacobs and Dior shows, they've brought in bright oranges, purple and red shades-worn either matte or with some shimmer.

Under- Eye Liner
The return of the 80s makeup style viewed at Nanette Lepore, of wearing liner on the bottom lid, has come back with a soft, pretty vengeance, as well as in strong strokes like that seen at Lanvin. This look can be achieved with a pencil, liquid liner or shadow, and can be worn as a part of a smudged eye look or a stand alone.

Pastel Eyes - From perfect lavender shadows, spotted at Versace, to a mosaic of various pastel tones (seen at DVF), it's an eye powder play we haven't seen in quite some time. The light colors dance around your lids for a flirty, fun for an un-expectant level of seduction.

Nude Makeup - Spotted Gucci, Balmain and Burberry, nude is the no-makeup makeup look that comes back every season. What makes this year's offering so different? Its dewy, glossy eyes and skin applied in shades ranging from pinks to peach.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

10 Best & Worst Grammy Glam Looks

The Grammy Awards hold a special place in our hearts for those what-were-they-thinking?! red carpet moments. Though viewed as the Oscars of the music industry, only few musicians play the role of fashion divas or devos, if you will. There are staples -- Beyonce, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige -- who often get it right. But then there are the works in progress: Keyshia Cole, Fantasia, Mariah Carey. These ladies oftentimes strike a fashion note best left un-played, and we love them for it! Here, our roundup of the best and worst looks of Grammy's past.

1. Best: Alicia Keys, Grammys 2009 - We've watched Alicia Keys blossom from the braid-wearing 'round-the-way-girl, into the glam goddess who plays the part of the on-trend, music princess. Last year, she took her look to a new level, walking the red carpet in a navy blue gown and offset a sophisticated updo by channeling her inner rock rebel with matte fuchsia lipstick and a nude eye accented with lashes. Fab!

2. Worst: M.I.A., Grammys 2009 - We gave M.I.A. props for rocking the runway and performing when she was due to give birth just a few weeks later. But we couldn't cosign on the lack-of-effort put toward her hair and makeup. From the red eye shadow that looks like it was smeared from her lip color (who didn't do the two-for-one shade share back in the day?) five minutes before she got out of the car, to the bed-head hair that just looked unkempt, her look should have represented what her initials normally stands for and stayed missing.

3. Best: Beyonce, Grammys 2007 - The female hustla consistently wows in the beauty department, and in 2007, it was no different. She arrived sporting long, Rupunzel-like waves with an old Hollywood glam twist, and pretty, dewy makeup. Flawless.

4: Worst: Fantasia, Grammys 2008 - Ooh, girl. We heart ourselves some Fantasia for her unbelievable singing voice. She can rip a music note similar to our girl Patti LaBelle. But when it comes to the grooming department, she needs lessons, on the quick. The decision to shave her head and dye one side platinum and attach black hair extensions to the other, actually caused a moment of silence for Fantasia's style meter. Clearly, it was not resting in peace.

5. Best: Queen Latifah, Grammys 2009 - From the moment she came onto the music scene, there has never been an image of Latifah on a Red Carpet where she did not dress appropriately. Indeed, she plays the role of the au natural glamour girl--whose beauty looks effortless--well. And whenever she switches hats from actor to hip-hop to R&B artist, she brings the same level of effortless chic that all want to emulate. All hail the Queen!

6: Worst: J.Hud, Grammys 2009 - We normally don't have problems with Jennifer Hudson's wigs or extensions. Saving when she opts for styles like this one that tucks behind the ear, showing a very unnatural hairline. This is either lazy styling by her hair person or they just don't have the skill set to make this look more natural. Nothing screams, "I'm wearing somebody else's hair" more so than an unnatural hair line, a part with no scalp, and then tucking the hair behind the ears. It makes us cringe every time.

7. Best: Janelle Monae, Grammys 2009 - She has a funky edge that we haven't seen on a female artist in quite a while. So when Janelle Monae hits the red carpet in her Elvis Costello black and white pantsuits, we only notice one thing: her gorgeous natural hair in a faux hawk, her immaculate complexion and how the touch of shimmer dances around her eyes. Effortless, natural and beautiful.

8. Worst: Ashanti, Grammys 2009 - In the beginning, when Ashanti came out and it was her and Tweet rivaling for the top spot of new artist, she edged out the bird with her understated, yet sexy style. But somewhere along the lines her style-meter became tone deaf. This photo is just one example. Pairing bright pink lips with a nude eye? Gorgeous. Combining it with bright blue eyeliner and blue shadow? Clown-ish.

9. Best: Rihanna, Grammys 2008 - Starting with the haircut whose end-result was copied around the globe, Rihanna came into her own-musically and from a fashion standpoint as the newest inguenue to watch. Eschewing the standard gown, the then 19-year-old showed up in a bright cobalt blue dress from Marc Jacobs and complimented its fresh, young look with a short, sassy black hair cut and simple, glowing, dewy makeup.

10: Worst: Leona Lewis, Grammys 2009 - Tone-on-tone only works when your tone is the opposite. I'm not sure who decided to 1) dress her in this extremely unflattering camel-colored gown and 2) leave her with honey-blonde highlights. But whoever it was should be given the style boot. For such a high occasion, they should have stepped up her style game to make her look be as refreshing as her voice. But if her appearance at the Golden Globes is any indication, this year, we're expecting to see just that.

JLo has ten. Kimora has six. Mariah has three. Over the past 15 years, the consistent release of celebrity fragrances has provided a well-needed uptick in the scent category, with Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds paving the way. Celebrities of color, however, didn't enter the fold until 1999. First on an international level with Naomi Campbell releasing her own eponymous scent, while simultaneously becoming the first black woman to have a scent named in her honor. In 2002 on U.S. shores, Jennifer Lopez signed a license deal with Coty Fragrances, making her the first Latina to launch her own fragrance line. Beyonce followed suit two years later, albeit as a spokesperson for Tommy Hilfiger's True Star (She's launching her own fragrance, Heat, in February). After the success of those launches -- Lopez's reportedly sold $44 million in the first four months -- every fragrance brand wanted a celebrity-endorsed line.

Some star releases such as Paris Hilton and Donald Trump's vaporized just as quickly as their bottom notes spritzed into the air. Others, like Lopez, Kimora Lee Simmons and Diddy's, wafted way above and drifted far and wide into the ether, racking up more than a combined $300 million in sales. Since then, more singers, actresses and athletes have followed their nose to lucrative launches. We highlight the best of the bunch, based on their sweetest sales.

1. Glow by J.Lo
Jennifer Lopez was the first to enter the game on an ownership status-seeking and getting a percentage of profits when she licensed her name, rather than accept the position as a paid spokesperson. For eight years J.Lo has released 10 different fragrances, Glow, Miami Glow, Glow in the Dark, Night Glow, Love at First Glow, Live, Live Luxe, Still, Deseo and Deseo for Ever.

2. Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons
Kimora sells the image of being fabulous. So what woman wouldn't want to smell like she's the next Kimora Lee Simmons? That's what fragrance giant Coty bet on when it released her first scent Baby Phat in 2004. Since then there has been Baby Phat Goddess, Baby Phat Golden Goddess, Baby Phat Fabulosity, Baby Phat Seductive Goddess.

3. Unforgivable by Sean John
He might not be able to make a star out of his bands, but when it comes to the fragrance industry P.Diddy's nose knows what really makes scents. Since the debut of his first fragrance, Unforgivable, in 2006, done in partnership with Estee Lauder, he has remained at the top of the olfactory heap, releasing Unforgiveable, Unforgiveable Woman and more recently, I Am King, in homage to Barack Obama.

4. Forever, Luscious Pink and M by Mariah Carey
We might not love her red carpet efforts, but fans globally can't get enough of Mariah's smell. She released Forever in 2007, under the Elizabeth Arden label, and increased its US perfume sales by 7%. A year later, she released Luscious Pink. And last year, another scent, M by Mariah, followed suit. Expect to see new releases in the upcoming years.

5. Driven by Derek Jeter
As one of the most sought-after bachelors in New York City, it's no wonder Derek Jeter's scent, Driven by Derek Jeter, released in partnership with Avon, has been a home run for the company's men division. To date, it is one of Avon's best-selling fragrances.

6. Him and She by Usher
When Usher released two fragrances for his debut-Usher for Him and Usher for She in 2006--the Atlanta-based crooner hit both markets running. The fragrances ranked in the top 40 of perfume sales for that year. In 2009 he followed up with a new men's scent, VIP.

7. Rocawear 9IX by Shawn Carter
Created in partnership with Elizabeth Arden and Rocawear, in 2008, Jay-Z launched Rocawear 9IX, a men's fragrance whose sales "surprised [the company's] expectations." The following year he released a limited-edition version for Father's Day and is poised to release a host of male grooming products.
