While King's in the position to play high-maintenance diva, she describes herself as an easy-maintenance girl prone to mixing lavish goods with a few drugstore faves. Most of the items in her makeup bag are recommendations, but once she discovers a product that works, she's loyal.
"I stick with tried and true," says King, 56, who's also editor-at-large of O, The Oprah Magazine.
The lovely King shares with BlackVoices.com the five beauty staples that allow her to put her best self forward.
1. Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin scent
King's a longtime fan of Jo Malone's products, so it's no wonder she counts the Lime Basil & Mandarin Bath Oil ($25, jomalone.com), Lime Basil & Mandarin Body Lotion ($65, jomalone.com) and Lime Basil & Mandarin Home Candle ($65, jomalone.com) among her favorite things. "It's fresh and citrusy, not perfumy. I've been using them over 10 years," she says.

2. Anastasia Beverly Hills for brows
Whenever King is in Los Angeles, she makes a point of stopping at Anastasia Beverly Hills Salon (and In and Out and Sprinkles for cupcakes) to shape up her brows (prices start at $45, anastasia.net).
"I hate having mine done, but when I muster the courage, I go to Anastasia," King say of Anastasia Soare, eyebrow guru to the stars, including BFF Winfrey. Why does she dislike the process? The pain. "They're waxed and then tweezed. I always go as little as possible," King says. Don't have time to fly into L.A. to tame your caterpillars? Visit the Anastasia Brow Studio exclusively at Nordstrom.

3. Lanier Long Aloe Vera Supreme Lotion
King recently fell in love with Aloe Vera Supreme Lotion (available at lanierlong.com), handmade by her makeup artist, Lanier Long. And this product is 100% natural. Read: No artificial fragrances, dyes or fillers. "It's so natural, you have to shake it. It doesn't contain any mineral oil or petroleum -- only sweet almond oils, vitamin E and fresh aloe vera gel," says King, who loves how moisturized it leaves her skin.

4. Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color Collection
There's nothing like finding the right lipstick shade, especially one that doesn't require constant reapplication and doesn't dry out your lips. For King, that shade is warm sable and the brand is Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color Collection ($45, tomford.com). "They have great pigment and glide right on; they leave that luxurious feel," she says. "And their packaging is so pretty!"

5. Black Opal Oil-Absorbing Pressed Powder
Celebrity makeup artist Long also introduced King to drug store regular Black Opal Oil-Absorbing Pressed Powder in medium brown ($8.95, blackopalbeauty.com), a go-to during commercial breaks on 'The Gayle King Show.' "It's light and airy, and controls shine without that cakiness that some powders have," she says. Another benefit this pressed powder offers? "It comes in a sleek case that fits right in your evening clutch," King adds.

How cool! I didn't know Ms. King used Black Opal?? So do I. I like it because it's affordable and I can get it at Walmart. It also works.

I use Black Opal as well, the Heavenly Honey foundation stick, matching concealer, and neutral/light loose powder. I have a pressed powder as well. I use their glosses, I've had lipsticks, eyeshadows, etc., and they rock. Their bronzers are to die for. I really love this brand.

For every lady, there's a lucky gentleman who is ready and willing to take her for all of her beauty, regardless of how she wears her hair and make-up. People of most all races are tired of the group ego business. It is no longer important to class-identify to experience self-worth. As a black man, I admire and respect the spirit of the woman and take the external presentation as simply that.

@ dre... The little girls of color need role models... muscle butt Serena Williams under a white look blond wig? NO! Black women copy white womens hair doo look so hard she now has no idenitity And when the little girls copy that fake white head look she tends to look older than her age and get into that kind of trouble and end up with 5 or more baby daddy's Women of color look better with curl. We love all natural women of color. Stop copying other races hair and try to copy a woman of color Then watch everybody give you respect. All fake phoney white head look women get disrespected and laughed at like when she has that ghetto weave hanging off the back of her head with 2 textures of hair showing. Help the little girl like who and what she is.

@ kelly...here is some education for you, When black women copy white woman's straight hair with chemicals and that ghetto hotcomb burning her ears necks and foreheads in the name of "pretty" Black women are in fact destroying her scalp and hair, Black women look better with curl. You may wake up and find your hair is still on the pillow or it stops growing. As it stands white women dictate to black women what's beautiful and dumb low selfesteem black women follow and inturn look funny with contacts and all that white look holloween costume shyt looking like BOZO the clown. Do you even know how to care for your own hair? Stop copying white woman's natural thats ghetto Practice your own natural. What would happen if I put water on your head? I tell you... POW! back to natural. And some lonely people like dre will take anything he can get. I met a lady took her home and she came out of her fake white look and she did not look like the same girl I met. Real reconize real and real and fake is not a match. What is a woman of color?

Black Opal has been around for years, in fact I think my mother used it back in her day so what is the big news? I feel sorry for any woman that takes any makeup advice from Gail or Oprah. Those two are not anybodies standard of beauty for black women.
