Glow Head to Toe Like Keri Hilson: Ashunta Shows You How

When awards season hits, everyone is focused on who's wearing what on the red carpet, who's nominated, and what crazy performances are in store for the evening. But what about those who aren't nominated, didn't wear anything outlandish on the carpet, and just happen to be there, looking pretty?

One of those individuals was singer Keri Hilson, who hit the Grammy red carpet with a glowing natural look that went perfectly with her funky blue Basil Soda mini dress. While many were examining the dresses, we were mystified by her perfect skin and glowing tone.

Makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff gave us a backstage peek at how she put together the fresh-faced beauty.

Skin:
Sheriff went for a clean and natural base. "I kept the skin natural, glowing and creamy with a pop of peony pink on cheeks," she said. The fresh and clean look drew attention to other dramatic features like Hilson's eyes. First, she applied a skin serum (Dior Capture Totale One Essential Serum, $135, dior.com), followed by Laura Mercier Foundation Primer ($30, lauramercier.com) to help smooth out Hilson's complexion and to help the foundation look as natural and flawless as possible.
Next, she used Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Creme SPF 20 Foundation ($30, dermablend.com) in Caramel Beige to cover blemishes and to give Hilson a clean and even tone. Under Hilson's eyes, she used the Cover Girl Queen Collection Natural Hue Concealer ($6, Walgreens.com) to brighten and give her a more awake look.
Cheeks:
Sticking with the muted and fresh look, Sheriff chose a cream instead of a powder for Hilson's cheeks. "I opted for cream blush to make Keri's skin look radiant and healthy," she says. Smashbox In Bloom Creamy Cheek Duo in Blushing Peony ($26, smashbox.com) rubs into skin for a naturally flushed finished rather than a bold, dramatic one.
Bronzer:
To add a little shimmer, which worked perfectly for the red carpet, Sheriff applied a combination of Nars The Multiple stick in Portofino ($39, narscosmetics.com), which she used as a bronzer, and a light brushing of Girlactik Beauty's Heavens Dust in Angel Gold ($18, girlactik.com) as a highlighter. The combo gave Hilson a subtle glow that wasn't overdone or too glittery.
Eyes:
On Hilson's eyes, Sheriff went for drama, opting for a colorful take on a traditional smoky eye. "I created a winged transparent smoke and added a little pizzazz with teal blue multicolored glitter liner on her bottom lash line," says Sheriff. The bottom blue was done with the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter liner in Air Guitar ($18, urbandecay.com). The blue liner played up Hilson's aqua-and-gold dress without looking too matchy. On the lids she used Max Factor Vivid Impact Eyeshadow Duo ($2, buymebeauty.com) to get a smoked-out effect.
On both the upper and lower lashes she used Cover Girl Liquiline Blast in Blackfire ($8, ulta.com) to amp up the smokiness. Sheriff topped off the drama by adding a pair of Ardell Fancy Lashes ($6, drugstore.com) for a full glam look.
Brows:
Instead of using traditional brow gels and powders to define Keri's brows, Sheriff used the Cover Girl Queen Collection Natural Hue Mineral Bronzer ($8.29, drugstore.com) to add a hint of color, followed by a dab of Smith's Rosebud Salve ($6, bigelowchemists.com) as a brow gel, which she applied using a disposable lash wand.
Lips:
Hilson's lips were neutral with a hint of shimmer. Sheriff used Girlactik Beauty Star Gloss ($16, girlactik.com) for a subtle pink shimmer and skipped lip liner to keep the look soft.
Body:
Hilson's strapless mini showed off a lot of skin, so Sheriff used Josie Maran Argan Iluminizer ($28, sephora.com) to give Hilson an overall glow that accented her face.
What did you think of Keri's shimmering look?
