Cellulite: An ugly word we're all too familiar with. So familiar, in fact, that 90% of all women struggle with this problem. It has the power to ruin your plans to wear that tiny birthday dress or put a damper on your future swimsuit shopping plans. The worst thing about it? Finding a solution. With all the lotions, potions and creams out there, how could we ever know just which one actually works? And let's not even get started on surgery. Is it all really worth the money? How can we get the best results? We talked to licensed esthetician Scott-Vincent Borba and did a little research on our own to find the best products and solutions for this common body woe.

THE GENES IN OUR JEANS

First and foremost, what causes cellulite? According to Borba, "cellulite is caused by the distortion of fat deposits in the connective tissue beneath the skin, changing its texture. Fat cells can become too large for the natural fiber compartments which hold the skin. The compartments bulge and form uneven layers hence that orange peel or cottage cheese look." Cute! He also shared with us the information we really want to know: yes, it's genetic. That's right ladies, it's not about your diet, the way you sit, or how you're aging - it is more than okay to blame your moms! Kidding aside, the are plenty of ways to combat, reduce and hide cellulite to keep you looking as sexy as ever.

A LITTLE STIMULATION

As Mr. Borba explains, "It's important to stimulate microcirculation, which will increase cellular turnover - thus giving skin a smoother, firmer look and feel." From his own line he recommends Borba Firming Micro-Diamond Body Polish ($28.00, Borba.com). It contains the necessary anti-oxidants and exfoliators to help get your skin in firm and smooth. The best part of it? It can be done in the shower as part of your every day routine. It also contains aescin, which helps seal the walls of the capillaries on the skin and improves blood flow.

Another great way to decrease the appearance of cellulite is through the usage of spandex. It is a quick and easy way to smooth out the rippled look caused by cellulite. To get the best and smoothest coverage, try Spanx In-Power Line Super Power Panties ($32.00, Spanx.com). These miracle workers will give every lump and bump a silky smooth finish. Not only will they aid in giving you that hourglass figure, but it will also hold the skin in shape, helping to reduce the reoccurrence of cellulite. They come in a variety of colors, lengths and sizes and can be worn as an undergarment or even while hanging out around the house. They are also built to last! Consider them all-purpose pieces; you're sure to get a great wear out of them.

MORNING JOLT

Caffeine is another great way to fight cellulite. While we do not recommend drinking a lot of caffeine, drinking it in moderation can definitely be helpful. According to Borba, "Stimulating toxin and blood circulation will always help." He suggests doing this by drinking one cup of a caffeinated beverage a day. Not into java? Try Tazo Green Tea ($9.90, Starbucksstore.com). It comes in a number of delicious flavors and is very easy to make. Topical products containing caffeine are also key for fighting cellulite - remember last week's DIY Beauty? A great product to invest in is Bobbi Brown Hydrating Intense Night Cream ($58.00, BobbiBrown.com). Apply this creamy moisturizer before you go to bed and let the antioxidants do their job.

HELP ON A BUDGET

If you're a woman on a budget like most of us are, there are plenty of things to do in the comfort of your own home to keep the look of cellulite to a minimum. The easiest and cheapest way to control it is through good, old-fashioned exercise. Not only will it keep you both fit and healthy, but toned muscles reduce the appearance of jiggly flesh. Doing lunges while watching television or running instead of walking up the stairs keeps legs tight and toned. You can also use products found right in your refrigerator. In Scott-Vincent Borba's Skintervention: The Personalized Solution for Healthier, Younger and Flawless-Looking Skin ($14.95, borba.com), Borba offers a number of cellulite reducing, skin firming treatments that can be done using things already in the home. One of the easiest is the Firming Yolk Mask. To use, "You'll need 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Beat the egg (be sure to use the whole egg because the omegas are in the yolk) and add a teaspoon of baking soda. Brush the mixture on the skin with a clean, flat brush, sponge or spoon. Let the mixture dry for about 8 minutes, then gently wash it off with warm water." This treatment is essential because the egg yolks contain vitamins A, D and E, which are great for keeping the skin firm and shiny, and the baking soda is good for tightening skin and killing bacteria.

The fact is, ladies, cellulite can be controlled and slowed down, but it cannot be stopped. It can happen in your teens, your 90's or anywhere in between. The idea is to do what works best for you and makes you most comfortable in your own skin. What are your secrets for keeping the upper hand on your cellulite?
