Salon manager Kim Tran explained to Fonville that the extra fee was meant to cover the cost of replacing the $2,500 salon chair, in the chance that it broke.
"I said, Ma'am, you can't charge me $5 more. That's discrimination because of my weight," Fonville told WSB TV.
According to the salon owner, the chairs are only meant to withstand 200 pounds and anything above that weight has the potential to damage the chairs.
"Do you think that's fair when we take $24 [for manicure and pedicure] and we have to pay $2,500? Is that fair? No," said Tran in her defense. Tran has since refunded Fonville her $5 and told her to take her business elsewhere.
Fonville, who was close to tears when given the news, would like more customers to learn about the salon's unfair practices.
"The word has to get out there that these people are discriminating against us because of our weight," she said. "I mean come on, we're in America. You can't do that."
Hot & Heavy Celebs
Jordin Sparks: This pop star has taught legions of young fans that you don't have to be stick thin to be beautiful. Little known fact: Before she won 'American Idol,' she won a model search contest for plus-size store Torrid.
Toccara Jones: Not many plus-size models make it into the pages of Vogue Italia. Then again, not many models of any size make it into that magazine. That Toccara got her own spread in 2008's all-black issue should say something.
Oprah Winfrey: Fans of the wildly successful television personality and businesswoman have seen her weight fluctuate over the years, but most have known for years what Ms. Winfrey seems to have recently figured out -- as long as she's healthy, she looks just right!
Jill Scott: On her HBO show, 'No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency,' the new mom plays a woman of "traditional build," but there's nothing traditional about this radiant and talented singer and actress.
Raven-Symone: One of this former child star's missions is to promote self-esteem in young girls. By embracing her curves and resisting the urge to conform to Hollywood's standards, she does this without even trying!
Mo'Nique: Part of her comedy career has been built on making fun of skinny girls. Since Mo'Nique recently dropped some weight to get healthy, she can rep for both sides!
Queen Latifah: Not only is Queen Latifah a triple threat actor, singer and rapper, she's also a CoverGirl. How's that for hot?
Jazmine Sullivan: In a sea of stick-thin R&B girls with weak voices, songstress Sullivan stands out with her major pipes and enviable curves!
Sherri Shepherd: Although the 'View' co-host and new Lifetime sitcom star is shrinking -- she recently donned a swimsuit on air after a summer-long weight-loss challenge -- the bubbly comedian is still has her trademark curves.
Jennifer Hudson: With a beautiful voice and a beautiful personality, J-Hud has stolen hearts and inspired legions of fans.

let me guess this straight.. they want to charge an addt'l $5 for a $2500 chair in the event that it breaks? LOL.. LMAO.. ROFL..
If the chair breaks then u sue the person who broke it not add on $5 because she was overweight.. it's discrimination.. if i were the lady i'd take my business elsewhere and let everyone know in the neighborhood not to go there anymore..
ppl don't enjoy being overweight and it's sad that because they are or because they haven't gotten their rude awakening to lose weight ppl want to take advantage of them, abuse them, discriminate against them, make fun of them and use them as an example 4 stupid shyt such as this..
they have their own problems w/out ppl adding on to it.. it's a battle that they have to fight and we shouldn't add to it..
she knows she needs to lose weight and when she gets the motivation she needs i'm sure she will..

According to the salon owner, the chairs are only meant to withstand 200 pounds and anything above that weight has the potential to damage the chairs. My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at agelessmat e.c om a nice and free place for younger women and older men, or older women and younger men, to interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.

Every now and then http://bit.ly/dailyGiveaways has free nail polish kits for people to do their own nails at home. This is 1 big $$ saver if you can do your own manicures. My momma taught me to do mine with I was younger and I have been ever since. My man thanks me every week for not spending $$ at the salon.

you can't sue the person who broke the chair because you accepted there buisness. What they needed to do was buy stronger chairs and charged more money per manicure or hair styling.

Being overweight is no fun and I have been there. I agree "don't go back to that shop physically" you are too good for that. But return to that shop LEGALLY!!! THIS IS AMERICA and you have every right and all the proof you need to "SUE" her behind. You have earned the right to own her and her shop. Please don't let her get away with that kind of ignorance. Trust...there are some attorney's waiting for your call. It's a open and shut case. So thank her and take her and her ignorance to the bank. Peace!

This is becoming one fat nation, nothing--nothing--to be proud of. I think that more of the residents of this country of ours ought to start thinking about their health, their manners, and a bigger number of them even studying to become Americans. Not just weight opens doors, lady. Eatin' like the proverbial pig? Sounds like it.

Get real. I think it's wrong to charge that $5 because she didn't breakt he chair, but, people here in America just let themselves go PROUDLY with no shame. Back in the 70's, if there was a fat girl in highschool, they would have been stared at and laughed it. Now, every other girl/guy in school is obese. I'm on the side of the manicurist. Sometimes you just have to hurt people for them to get the point. But, I doubt that this woman would stop eating non-stop. It's a problem, correct it.

If people don't enjoy being FAT then why do they continue to eat outrageously caloric foods. My granddaughter who tipped the scale at over 200 lbs. at a doctors visit and didn't want me to see then went out to lunch and ordered cheese fries. That is irresponsible behavior and if she and others got called on it they might change their actions. Very few people are fat because of things beyond their control.

I agree with you 100%. No human should have to go through that. That is the same on the airlines but I've noticed that a lote of the Asian community that take up business in the African American community they will pull these stunts if they can get away with it. It's not all Asian but it's a few that looks down on African American.

Well, is anyone surprised to hear that it was yet another "black woman" that was overweight! That appears to be the norm these days ...sadly! The next issue is why are black women so "obsessed" with getting their nails done, try investing some of that money into some home exercise equipment, or a diet regiment. Lastly, why do black women always have to be giving Asian people money all the time? First it was for the fake hair, trying to emulate white women, but sadly can't, and now as usual the nails. Why don't they try opening up their own nail shops? Guess that makes too much sense. Personally, I don't blame the owner...have you actually seen some of these "super huge" black women today! Just, unbelievable

Well Eric I guess you must be living under a rock somewhere because your comment is crazy. Being over weight today has nothing to due with race there are just as many fat white females out there today as any other race. Go to a mall walk a crowded street go to a amusement park and you will soon see that comment is dead wrong.
Now onto the real subject at hand if these damn people were so damn worried about this expensive chair insure the damn thing so if anything happens to it then it would be replaced. Along with that I'm sure they would be going after the person who broke the chair in the first place but if that person isnt financially able to pay then insurance would be the best bet. Better still if your sooo worried about fat american females breaking your shit then pack it up and go the hell back to your own country where all you eat is rice and sea weed which has no fat in it..how bout that!

Eric, it is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and REMOVE ALL DOUBT!!!
Obesity is a nation-wide epidemic, not an issue isolated to blacks. If you're content on being an uneducated douchebag, then shut your racist hole and let the socially adept, literate grown-ups do the talking. Then go play with your tiny unit in a corner, because nobody wants your pathetic ass.
