Concealer Can Be Your Best Friend

Ah, concealer. How many times has it intimidated us because we're not sure how or when to use it? We have all seen concealer gone wrong: when the ring-around-the-eye has reared it's ugly head. Well, there is a shade for you and a way to match your tone perfectly. As a makeup artist, I work will all skin tones and sometimes need to mix colors to find the perfect shade. Once applied correctly, concealer can be your best friend (especially after a late night out that didn't involve much sleep). Here is a brief guide to making it work for you!

How to find the right shade
  • First, get a magnifying mirror (yes, the one that shows every nook and cranny) and look at your lovely face. Most women have at least two tones in their skin, while some women have more. Do you have yellow undertones? Redness? Purple, blue or greenish tones under your eyes? Is the eye area dry? These questions will help you understand what you are looking for. Concealers with yellow, peach, sienna and caramel tones work best on women of color, and you want to neutralize by using opposing shades. Redness can be counteracted with green concealer and peach can diffuse blue or purple tones. On darker skin tones, deep orange or sienna-based concealers can work beautifully, while lighter skin can handle yellow or peach. Don't be afraid to take your time and try different shades. Once blended correctly, the result is magical.

  • You want to find a concealer that is one shade lighter than your skin while considering your foundation shade. I always do the half-face test. Try the concealer with your foundation applied on one side and also without foundation on the other side. See if your foundation is affecting the tone and whether you can wear the concealer alone. Once you have found the right shade(s), then its time to prep!

How to prepare and apply
  • Make sure you hydrate under the eye properly with a good eye cream. Concealer doesn't sit well on dry skin. NEVER, ever, ever swipe or rub in the product. The eye area is so delicate, and you don't want to welcome the wrinkles that are just waiting to make an appearance by pulling or tugging. Always use your ring finger -- and pat, pat, pat.

  • After you have applied your favorite foundation, apply the concealer lightly with your ring finger or a brush (I use a MAC #224 brush on clients, but your fingers are the best makeup tools, and they warm the product for a smooth easy application). Pat the product underneath the eye, and blend it down the face near your nose and then pat it back up to your outer eye (creating a filled-in triangle). You can also apply it on your brow bone and on any skin imperfections. Blend well by patting and finish with a light dusting of your favorite powder.

By using concealer correctly, you will instantly lift and brighten without it looking like you went tanning with your favorite sunglasses on (not a good look by the way). So go forth, conceal and take your time. The result is a fresh, rested, flawless face!
