Brown Skin Needs Sunscreen, Too!

Ladies (and gents!) listen up! Sunscreen is not just for our fairer counterparts. African American skin burns just as easily, and now that the weather is warming up and the layers are beginning to come off, it's essential to discuss the importance of wearing sunscreen. Going outside without sunscreen is not only damaging for your skin, but it also puts you at risk for cancer. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so it's only fitting that BV gives you helpful tips on how to prevent skin cancer and sun damage to your skin.

Using sunscreen daily can help prevent skin cancer as well as photo-aging, which gives the appearance of aging. Leaving your skin exposed to the harmful effects of the sun can make you susceptible to developing "sun spots," which tend to be harder to treat for women of color. You can kiss your even complexion goodbye, too, because sun damage is known to create uneven pigmentation, a huge factor in premature aging of the skin.

All of these issues can easily be avoided by applying a UV protective moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher daily, even on cloudy days. Are you convinced that you need sunscreen in your life yet? Here at Black Voices, we've taken the liberty to compile a list of a few sunscreen products to try.
