If you've taken a walk through the cosmetics aisle at your local drugstore, you've probably noticed a thing or two when it comes to makeup geared toward women of color -- there really isn't any. You also may have noticed that "mineral" makeup is now all the rage.Always ready to serve and be successful, the supermodel- turned-business-mogul Iman has spearheaded a new venture into mineral-enhanced makeup, which will cater to our unique skin tones in an ideal range of shades.
Black Voices recently attended an IMAN Cosmetics event celebrating the latest addition to Iman's mineral makeup collection: Luxury Radiance Liquid Makeup Enriched with Minerals. The intimate gathering brought together bloggers, cosmetic experts and Iman herself to see firsthand why IMAN Cosmetics is one of the leading brands created for women of color.
During the event, attendees witnessed the makeovers of three models by makeup artist and Cosmetics Expert & Creative Director of IMAN Cosmetics Byron Barnes, using Iman's new mineral-enriched liquid collection.
"You want makeup to enhance your skin, not change the way you look, said Barnes. "Iman's collection provides the right amount of coverage without appearing drastic."
The three models each represented a different shade offered on Iman's line: Sand (light), Clay (medium) and Earth (deep). Afterward, attendees were offered makeovers. The makeup artists then helped each woman find her proper shade within the line.
The new mineral-enriched makeup consists of earth- and sea- based minerals. "Most mineral powder lines, like Sheer Cover, are pumped with titanium dioxide, an ingredient that is primarily responsible for making women of color look ashy," said Karen Chambers, director of product development for IMAN Cosmetics.
Titanium dioxide is not an ingredient in Iman's products. Rather, she uses natural elements such as acai, magnolia and vitamin E, which are responsible for hydrating and enhancing the skin.

Prior to introducing the mineral-enriched liquid foundation, IMAN Cosmetics launched Second to None Cover Cream Enriched with Minerals and Second to None Semi-Loose Powder Enriched with Minerals. "After the successful launch of our previous two mineral makeup introductions, I knew I wanted to reformulate our liquid makeup to incorporate all of the innovative mineral ingredients that are now available," said Iman.

I currently use Valana Minerals' "Golden Bamboo" mineral powder foundation which matches my complexion very well. I'm hopng that Iman will pick up on this from her competition and increase the selection of shades since Black women's complexion coloring varies quite a bit - 3 shades just won't cover the gamut. I love the idea of a liquid mineral foundation however. I'd like to try her line.
