10 Best & Worst Grammy Glam Looks

The Grammy Awards hold a special place in our hearts for those what-were-they-thinking?! red carpet moments. Though viewed as the Oscars of the music industry, only few musicians play the role of fashion divas or devos, if you will. There are staples -- Beyonce, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige -- who often get it right. But then there are the works in progress: Keyshia Cole, Fantasia, Mariah Carey. These ladies oftentimes strike a fashion note best left un-played, and we love them for it! Here, our roundup of the best and worst looks of Grammy's past.

1. Best: Alicia Keys, Grammys 2009 - We've watched Alicia Keys blossom from the braid-wearing 'round-the-way-girl, into the glam goddess who plays the part of the on-trend, music princess. Last year, she took her look to a new level, walking the red carpet in a navy blue gown and offset a sophisticated updo by channeling her inner rock rebel with matte fuchsia lipstick and a nude eye accented with lashes. Fab!

2. Worst: M.I.A., Grammys 2009 - We gave M.I.A. props for rocking the runway and performing when she was due to give birth just a few weeks later. But we couldn't cosign on the lack-of-effort put toward her hair and makeup. From the red eye shadow that looks like it was smeared from her lip color (who didn't do the two-for-one shade share back in the day?) five minutes before she got out of the car, to the bed-head hair that just looked unkempt, her look should have represented what her initials normally stands for and stayed missing.
3. Best: Beyonce, Grammys 2007 - The female hustla consistently wows in the beauty department, and in 2007, it was no different. She arrived sporting long, Rupunzel-like waves with an old Hollywood glam twist, and pretty, dewy makeup. Flawless.

4: Worst: Fantasia, Grammys 2008 - Ooh, girl. We heart ourselves some Fantasia for her unbelievable singing voice. She can rip a music note similar to our girl Patti LaBelle. But when it comes to the grooming department, she needs lessons, on the quick. The decision to shave her head and dye one side platinum and attach black hair extensions to the other, actually caused a moment of silence for Fantasia's style meter. Clearly, it was not resting in peace.

5. Best: Queen Latifah, Grammys 2009 - From the moment she came onto the music scene, there has never been an image of Latifah on a Red Carpet where she did not dress appropriately. Indeed, she plays the role of the au natural glamour girl--whose beauty looks effortless--well. And whenever she switches hats from actor to hip-hop to R&B artist, she brings the same level of effortless chic that all want to emulate. All hail the Queen!

6: Worst: J.Hud, Grammys 2009 - We normally don't have problems with Jennifer Hudson's wigs or extensions. Saving when she opts for styles like this one that tucks behind the ear, showing a very unnatural hairline. This is either lazy styling by her hair person or they just don't have the skill set to make this look more natural. Nothing screams, "I'm wearing somebody else's hair" more so than an unnatural hair line, a part with no scalp, and then tucking the hair behind the ears. It makes us cringe every time.

7. Best: Janelle Monae, Grammys 2009 - She has a funky edge that we haven't seen on a female artist in quite a while. So when Janelle Monae hits the red carpet in her Elvis Costello black and white pantsuits, we only notice one thing: her gorgeous natural hair in a faux hawk, her immaculate complexion and how the touch of shimmer dances around her eyes. Effortless, natural and beautiful.

8. Worst: Ashanti, Grammys 2009 - In the beginning, when Ashanti came out and it was her and Tweet rivaling for the top spot of new artist, she edged out the bird with her understated, yet sexy style. But somewhere along the lines her style-meter became tone deaf. This photo is just one example. Pairing bright pink lips with a nude eye? Gorgeous. Combining it with bright blue eyeliner and blue shadow? Clown-ish.

9. Best: Rihanna, Grammys 2008 - Starting with the haircut whose end-result was copied around the globe, Rihanna came into her own-musically and from a fashion standpoint as the newest inguenue to watch. Eschewing the standard gown, the then 19-year-old showed up in a bright cobalt blue dress from Marc Jacobs and complimented its fresh, young look with a short, sassy black hair cut and simple, glowing, dewy makeup.

10: Worst: Leona Lewis, Grammys 2009 - Tone-on-tone only works when your tone is the opposite. I'm not sure who decided to 1) dress her in this extremely unflattering camel-colored gown and 2) leave her with honey-blonde highlights. But whoever it was should be given the style boot. For such a high occasion, they should have stepped up her style game to make her look be as refreshing as her voice. But if her appearance at the Golden Globes is any indication, this year, we're expecting to see just that.
