Most stars who dare to be seen in public wearing fur eventually get an intimidating cease and desist letter from the animal-rights organization PETA. There are a few different paths celebrities can take after receiving said letter. There's the Aretha Franklin route, otherwise known as ignore-PETA-and-continue-to-leave-the-house-dripping-in-chinchilla-pelts route. If one is so inclined, one could follow the Beyoncé path of least resistance and stop wearing fur altogether. Or just do like Naomi Campbell -- tell PETA you'll stop wearing fur and then do it anyway.
And then there's the Kelis path, which is to take to your MySpace page and write an angry pro-carnivore, pro-fur letter to PETA and the world to read. The singer and new mother (and ardent consumer of animal products) was so offended by an unsolicited e-mail she recently received from the organization about her fur wearing that she fired off a post in which she called for the death of all rodents and asserts she would "eat pterodactyl if you found some and you told [her] it was meaty and delicious."
Kelis wrote that she draws the line at wearing skin or fur from endangered species but enjoys chinchilla and mink fur because "it's warm as hell and feels glorious."
Instead of worrying about animal rights, Kelis wrote, PETA should concern itself with underpaid minorities working on farms and international women's issues. Despite the weighty topics, Kelis also took a moment to briefly complain about the effect PETA's anti-fur campaign is having on the world of style.
"The death of high fashion," she wrote. "Ugh." Read her blog post in its entirety here.
UPDATE: PETA gave Black Voices exclusive access to the private e-mail message sent to Kelis on Jan. 12:
"Dear Kelis,
I hope that this finds you well. I'm writing today because we've been inundated with phone calls and e-mails from folks alerting us to photos of you wearing a fur hat and coat while out in London over the weekend.
Please know that animals killed for their fur endure immense suffering. Foxes, minks, coyotes, and rabbits -- and even dogs and cats -- are bludgeoned, strangled, genitally electrocuted and even skinned alive for their pelts. ...
If you enjoy the look of fur, renowned designers, including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Stella McCartney, and Vivienne Westwood, couple fashion with compassion and use only faux fur in their lines. We hope you found this information helpful and will join countless celebrities, like Charlize Theron, Khloe Kardashian, Nia Long, Kid Sister, Pink, and Michelle Obama, in publicly swearing off fur. Thanks so much for your time and attention, and best wishes for a great 2010!"
The e-mail also included a link to an undercover video expose of fur farms narrated by Eva Mendes.
Now that you've heard both sides, who is right and who is wrong? Which side do you fall on in the fur debate?

i used to be on the fence on this, as we all have to eat meat, to stay healthy. I am convinced of that now, as beans are not a protein substitute. It is sad that we eat other animals such as cows, but I did not realize this till i was an adult. The singer sounds very intelligent, but if it is unnecessary to use pelts for keeping warm, then they are killed for someone to look good, and the way they are put down is horrendous, so we should not wear fur unless we have no choice, like the caveman, etc. another thing. have you ever noticed that people look like spiders? we are not much more intelligent than them, other than having the ability to speak, and if I were from another planet, looking down at humans wearing fur, I would think they looked like silly spiders. Also, what is up with the speedskater pants? Very unmasculine, and they show what you dont have.

Anyone wearing real fur should be skinned alive & tortured because they have no love in their heart nor do they care about a living being who is helpless, defenseless, & innocent. These people are heartless, coldhearted bastards who are out for the looks & money. I have a faux mink coat & it is so warm that sometimes I have to take it off since it gets too hot for me to have it on. I have 4 rats & 2 mice & I love animals more than material posession. LIFE COMES FIRST OVER MONEY & MATERIALS.

I have never heard PETA tell bikers not to wear leather or men not to wear their snake skin boots. PETA a liberal or cowardly organization?? Maybe they can only pick on women and not men??

Let is be said of the people: Does anyone know the way?
How sad! PETA has become just another divisive distraction from the real life issues that everyday humanity is facing.
The fact is, we are human beings; many of whom can't help but naturally follow the example of a loving Heavenly Father who clothed Adam and Eve, appropriately, with the skin of animals - once they themselves became ashamed of their own nakedness.
I say, "appropriately", because (if we all just took a moment to meditate on the things of life - just to get some idea what we've all gone through to survive this far - what you'd discover is) how quickly man has gone from the way, being created in the image of God, Himself, to becoming the most savage of all beasts even amongst its own.
In fact, so many of us have become animals
ourselves that it is us who need to be saved, yet, d-evil in it all [is] we are too divisively distracted to reach out - just for a moment - to minister salvation to the animalistic souls, again, so many have become. So, what do far too many choose to do? Attack a [wo]man, like Kelis, but (by all means) save the animals.
Lord forgive us all, for we know not what we do.
You, Lord God, have shown us YOUR wisdom in that You would have all be saved - every one of these and so many more - yet, my heart weeps for all who are caught up in this thing (this provision) - pointing fingers, hating, chaining one another (even moreso than the wild beasts of the field), as if we ourselves are the real animals when, in fact, clearly "man does not live by bread alone"; for surely You, Lord God, in your wisdom, have given us "meat" to eat and Your word - Lord God - (every one that precedeth from Your mouth), we have discovered, is good for consumption.
Moreover, surely, PETA can find some spare time for the people of Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan, China, North Korea, America and the rest of humanity; and from the sounds of some of these posts, so can we all. Meanwhile, this babygirl - Kelis - just happens to be right; so, we should all appreciate what she stands for, i.e., our freedom to choose whether or not to be naked amongst our fellow man or be clothed in the provisions of God, Himself.
Nonetheless, I have so much love for all of you people - you have no idea - it has been alotted me 1) an enduring love for my fellow man, then, 2)came forgiveness, and last, the discernment of it all; that being so, the end result of this thing should not be division, but as it was in the begining, love and nothing but love, one for another.
Let those who have an ear hear what the spirit is saying.
Though some of you could, clearly, use a spanking, many could get by with just a little timeout; while, the majority, well, let's just say a little tough love goes a long way as the beauty of it all is that God so loves everyone of us - the same - and (in His wisdom) has shown us the way.
So, read the bible people (not as a crutch, for the weak, but as the loving and nurturing doctrine it is; which only the strong can uphold); you'd be surprised - it's in there.
Peace and Much Love
P.S. I will leave you now to go about my day - as I am being perfected, strenghtened, through persecution - by my dealings with the beasts in this system of things; those who devour our freedom, gradually ripping even our children from the love and safety of their parents; under the color of law. Would you save them too? Surely, the Lord says, "Yes!" Again, let those who have an ear hear what the spirit is saying. Meanwhile, as I endure the battle to save, again, both "our children" and the wild beasts of humanity; let those in the rear take heed to guard against division, that you not be conquered, but conquerors against "d-evil[s]"; the most common beasts of [wo]man.

Keli wear whatever you want, when we were poor and their families were living high, they all worn fur.
They wear leather shoes and drag around wonderful leather bags too costly for some of us. What is the difference. God placed us all here for a purpose, and the animals have theirs, let one of those group members or member be left in a cold climate and see if they would not want a warm fur to stay alive. I enjoy them because the coat materials made today are worthless for style, warmthness and price. Good American clothing has gone foreign and the garments stink.

I'm a liberal, I'm a Democrat. I'm pro meat, pro gun, pro fur, pro death penalty and for a woman's right to choose (but would prefer they choose life). I believe in gay marriage -- it doesn't affect my marriage any more than CMT's "My Big Redneck Wedding" affects my marriage.
I think there is room in America for EVERYBODY and NOBODY should try to bully ANYBODY!!!!

They need to leave her alone. She is a citizen and it is not illegal to wear fur. Why dont peta concentrate on legislation, or something constructive? I'll tell you why. This is their five minutes of time consuming, wasteful fame. Many people at peta are drawn to violent imagery, and topics, and don't think they aren't eating hamburgers. They do. I wish tmz would get some pics of peta people eating meat. those photos would be priceless. They are hypocrites, but it is bad to wear fur only for style. Still, why don't they help the rats of New York city if they are so concerned? Talk about mass genicide. Or ants. or if you want to get technical, how about germs? or enzymes? These are all alive. We kill them because it is impossible to coexist with them, and/or they will be the cause of our own extinction if we don't. Why don't they save all the germs? Give me a break. They just enjoy humiliating celebrities, which gives them ten minutes of fame. HOnestly, it is all relative, and Peta people have gone overboard. PETA should be extinct. They are a nonprofit, making billions off people, and it is all going to the people who work there, or the president. What good do they do? None that I can see. Firing off emails is free. Oh big whoop, peta, you emailed one celebrity. Only ten million more people on the planet to go. There are criminals at PETA. PETA tries to scare people, and that is not right. It is sick.

PETA is so out of control it is not even funny. They have gone so overboard in their agendas that I find it hard to believe anything they have to say. As a breeder of dogs I am faced everyday with legislation they are trying to get passed in towns, cities and states that will prevent me from breeding my dogs. I am not a puppymill but a hobby breeder that shows dogs and tries to breed the very best dogs I can, I may raise 3 or 4 litters a year but if they get the legislation passed they want no one will be able to breed or it will cost you so much in taxes and fees that only large "farms" will be able to afford breeding. I have nothing good to say about this group because they have gone so far out in left field that they are now beyond being a reasonable organization and are just a bunch of nutcases that have a ton of money to support their farout beliefs. I wish people would really look at their goals and beliefs before donating money and backing this group of idiots. Just because it sounds good does not make it so.

I guess you have been living under a rock lady. Do you know how many dogs are killed each year, including pure breds because there are no homes for them? All you care about is yourself. These animals have feelings just like people. I don't completely agree with PETA's tactics, but they are getting some peoples attention. This problem is never going to go away, just like the problem of people killing people just because, because they are ignorant and only think about themselves, or just don't think period. If the animals could talk, and say, your killing my babies, or your killing my mother and I need her and love her, what would you do then. Since they can't talk themselves you can just pretend that they don't have feelings.

What is wrong with you people?? I don't agree with some of PETA's tactics, but do you realize how they torture these little living, FEELING creatures? I don't think God wants us to treat his animals that way. Look it up, find out how they kill these animals for their fur. How vain and selfish are those who contribute to the torture!

Thank you Kellis. It's time someone showed some courage in dealing with the sanctimoniously arrogant PETA.

When my Mother died several years ago, I gave all her fur coats away, she left them all to me, knowing I would never wear real fur, she thought I'd give them a good home! I gave her mink away to her nurse, her lamb coat to a friend of hers and the rest to the Goodwill. I worked for the Cancer Society in their gift shop, we must have had 50 or more coats, long and short that nobody wanted! The Cancer Society did not put them out for sale. I left so don't know what they did with them. I am a PETA member.

I do believe you don't get the meaning of liberal. Liberals, or for that matter, democrats, are not considered to be gun friendly, fur friendly, death penalty friendly. You should be a republican, except for your stance on the right to choose, and gay marriage. You sound more like a basic carnivore.

I'm not a PETA fan at all. They're a bit much to handle. However, I'm a believer that animals shouldn't be killed just so some woman will think she'll look nice wearing their fur. Real fur doesn't impress anybody anymore. There are so many new materials out there that give the same effect as real fur so why not just wear that. The leter that PETA sent to her was actually very nice. Nicer than the one I received from them about owning goldfish. I just think it's nicer and so compassionate to not wear real fur. I don't and have a clear conscience.

The thing of using fur is the way in which it is acquired; brutal and inhumane methods. I am bugged that a person such as this one who has a past of 'slave ownership' she would not sit there and think that if not for organizations such as PETA, no one would speak for what is inhumanely wrong. Blacks were treated as animals and possibly held them in lesser regard so, what I am trying to say here is, this lady (which I've never heard of as well) should think further on this fur topic. Also, Aretha Franklin has enough blubber to keep herself warm in the Artic. What is her excuse for to use fur? Inconsiderate. Where are the Japanese whalers when you need them.

I have posted this comment, once again, because - as time goes on - giving considerable thought, though I am not perfect, clearly, we are all being perfected in this thing called life; if we choose to be, therefore, I've corrected my typos and added a word or two where necessary.
So, let it be said of the people: Does anyone know the way?
How sad! PETA has become just another divisive distraction from the real life issues that everyday humanity is facing.

On a more humorous note: PETA (and others), apparently, would have history changed to such a degree that, perhaps, today, our children would be far better off exposed to images of naked cavemen, rather than the clothed ones we've become so accustomed too. Perhpas, in that case, they have a point; yet, it would be awfully chilly for those of you in the North - wouldn't it - just a bit breezy:).
