As the cooler weather begins to roll in and winter finally hits, my skin starts screaming for some extra attention, extra moisture and extra soothing. The same lotion that made my skin glisten and command attention during the summer months is starting to fall flat, and if I'm not careful, I'll end up with dry spots, cracked skin, and an overall dull, ashy look. To keep my skin looking, and most importantly feeling, fabulous, I switch up my moisture game. Suddenly, oils and butters make their way to the front, and light lotions find themselves on the bench. My top six picks for beautiful, soft, ash-free skin:

1. Curel Itch Defense Skin Balancing Lotion – I know I just said that lotions get replaced, but this is not your average lotion. The formula is incredibly thick and sinks in almost instantly to keep skin healthy. You know that itchy feeling you sometimes get after you shave your legs? I know I'm not the only one. No matter how much lotion you slather on, within a few minutes, you've got the itchies all over again? Itchy legs are a thing of the past with this lotion. Plus, it is fragrance free so it won't interfere with your fabulous signature scent, and it's accepted by the National Eczema Association. Not bad for a drugstore lotion that won't break the bank, huh?

Black Skin Care on a Budget
You don't have to sacrifice healthy skin to be frugal. Here is a summary of our top tips for inexpensive skin pampering.

BlackVoices.com
Importance of Nutrition: "Salmon, green leafy vegetables, carrots and olive oil are some food items that you should work to regularly include in a well balanced diet. Omega-3 fatty acids, found naturally in cold water fish, or, if vegan, found in vitamin supplements, can help to improve dryness and itching. Adequate Vitamin D is very important to skin and overall health. Lastly, there's no clinical evidence to definitively support that drinking eight glasses of water helps the skin, but, it certainly cannot hurt!"
Take Care of Your Body: "Diet, exercise and hydration are all vital to healthy skin, as is a good night's sleep (at least 8 hours) and some relaxation time."
Use Your Bath: "There is a definite mind-body connection between taking care of your skin and your sense of well-being. ... There are many affordable ways to pamper yourself. Start again in the bathtub – sit for 20 minutes and calm your senses by using a soothing body wash. Let a loved one massage you from head to toe with your favorite warmed moisturizer. Lastly, focus on your feet with a 30 minute foot wrap using any household plastic wrap and a warmed clinically proven moisturizer for some at-home pampering."
Visit a Dermatologist Yearly: "Brown skin needs sun protection all year round, but especially as we enter spring and summer. Wear sunscreen daily that has a sun protection factor of at least 15. In addition to examining your own body, use this time of year to visit your dermatologist for an annual total body skin exam. Any new or changing moles should be evaluated by a dermatologist. We, too, as African-Americans can get skin cancers, but in places that you might not expect such as the sole of your foot."

Lotions With Rich Ingredients: "Post-shower or bath time, pat yourself dry and liberally apply a clinically proven moisturizer. A favorite of mine is Suave Advanced Therapy Body Lotion – it soothes, softens and relieves severely dry skin. Be sure to carry a travel-size moisturizer with you because ashy hands and feet are difficult to hide!"

Moisturize: "The single most important element is moisturizing! Low humidity in the air, dry heat in the home or office and not hydrating skin properly can all lead to dry, itchy, cracked and uncomfortable skin. African-Americans must moisturize at least daily (twice daily is preferred) to avoid dull, ashy looking skin or hyperpigmentation (dark spots from constant scratching). Discoloration from rashes on African-American skin tends to linger for many months. That's why it is crucial that we nurture our skin before persistent dark spots appear."

Use Silk Scarves: "African-American women must also remember our hairline. Wool scarves, hats and coats can lead to breakage of the hair -- so don't forget your silk scarf under your hat, scarf or coat [to prevent dryness and breakage]."

2. Rx for Brown Skin Body Butter – Thick, creamy, with a heavenly scent, plus it has the ability to even out skin tone. What more could you ask for? This is one of my favorite body butters to use at night before bed, because your skin is left feeling supersoft to the touch, and the hint of vanilla and citrus is sure to draw your sweetie in for a late-night cuddle session.
3. Johnson's Baby Oil Lavender – A little bit of a spin on a classic. This is not a new product, but it always makes my top five winter must-haves list. When applied at the end of the shower (use caution, it makes the tub very slippery), it sinks in and moisturizes better than when applied when skin is dry. Rather than feeling greasy, when you pat yourself dry, you'll remove the excess, leaving your skin looking and feeling amazing. I work a graveyard shift, so when I get home, anything that helps me sleep is a plus, and the scent of lavender in the baby oil always does it for me.

4. Soft and Beautiful Skin Moisture Soft Body Oil Gel – Another great drugstore gem, Soft and Beautiful Skin Moisture Soft Body Oil Gel is a step up from using your baby's products. Formulated with aloe and olive oil, it sinks in quickly without sitting on top of the skin. This body oil gel is practically unscented, so add a few drops of your favorite scented oil and you have your own custom-blended scent and soft and beautiful skin!
5. AHAVA Dry Oil Spray – More pricey than the rest, but worth the splurge. If you have never experienced a dry oil spray, what are you waiting for? Dry oil sprays are particularly great for a night out because of the sexy sheen that it gives skin without leaving an oil slick on whatever you happen to touch. Sheen is sexy, greasy is not hot. AHAVA Dry Oil Spray is especially tantalizing due to the hints of mandarin and cedarwood.
6. Olay Body Quench Body Lotion, Active Hydration -- This ash-zapping moisturizer includes green tea and vitamins, and keeps manages to keep your skin hydrated without feeling slick or greasy for a good 24 hours. Plus it's easy to find at your local drugstore. $8.79,
